      Thousands Hit By Contaminated Water

At least 170,000 Anglian Water customers are being warned to boil supplies before drinking after traces of a stomach bug were found in testing.

Traces of the stomach bug cryptosporidium have been reported in an area which includes Northampton and Daventry.

The company says tap water is safe for washing, bathing and toilet flushing. People on a list of those with special needs will be given bottled water.

A statement from Anglia Water said: "Only once drinking water has been boiled and allowed to cool should it be used for drinking, preparing food or cleaning teeth. This advice also applies to pets.

"Tap water remains quite safe for washing, bathing and toilet flushing."

Anglian Water is investigating routine samples that have shown evidence of cryptosporidium in the water supply.

Cryptosporidium is a protozoan parasite that causes a severe diarrhoeal disease known as cryptosporidiosis.

The organism is of common worldwide occurrence and while there are several different species, only Cryptosporidium hominis and Cryptosporidium parvum are of significance for human health.

The former affects humans and the latter affects both humans and animals.

Customers in the affected areas can get updates and advice on the Anglian Water website.

      The company's call centre number is 08457 145 145.

The full list of communities is: Northampton, Collingtree, Grange Park, Great Houghton, Hardingstone, Boughton, Brixworth, Chapel Brampton, Church Brampton, Cottisbrooke, Hannington, Harleston, Holcot, Moulton, Old, Overstone, Pitsford, Scaldwell, Sywell, Wootton, Walgrave, Ashby St Ledger, Badby, Braunston, Bugbrooke, Byfield, Canons Ashby, Catsby, Charwelton, Daventry, Dodford, Everdon, Fatheringstone, Fawsby, Flore, Harpole, Hellidon, Kislingbury, Milton Malsor, Nether Heyford, Newnham, Norton, Preston Capes, Rothersthorpe, Staverton, Stowe Nine Churches, Upper Heyford, Upton, Weedon Bec, Welton, Woodford-cum-Mebris and Duston.

have just been googling this, crypto can live in soil, so probably best to not use water on the garden unless it's been boiled first .....
