  • Lettuce where Lettuce has been??

I'm now nearly through harvesting the first of my butterhead lettuces that I planted ages ago....

Once they are all gone, am I ok to sow some "cut and come again" varieties in their place? All my beds are now full (not just with lettuce!), so I'm running out of room!

    Thanks

    OWG

Yes OWG. You can plant your lettuce in the same place.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

No problem.Commercial lettuce growers do that year after year.

Could always give the lettuce a bit of a feed.

Trying to grow organic & worried about fertilizers. Are spray on or lay on(compost) better/healthier. Would appreciate ideas. Thanks, Karen

              Hi Karen
              Welcome to the vine.
              Few points:
You can put your location in the profile as it will help us answer questions.
You would be better to start a new thread with your question or tack on to one more closely associated with you query.
In general feed the soil not the plant. ie loads of compost, muck and leafmould. Blood fish and bone a good general organic based fertilizer for applying between crops. Seaweed spray as foliar feed is an excellent tonic during season.

Isn't it good to walk into the garden and pick a few leaves for a sandwich.

I have my fifth crop of lettuce growing in my tunnel (with the sixth batch of 150 sown already) and I plant them in the same area each time - and every bit of spare space I can find as well. No problems at all - mine are growing in soil though I did put down a liberal covering of 5 yr old cow manure and also the dross that was left after I had seived all my seed compost. Lettuces seem to love it and are growing both quickly and healthily.
