  • Sowing to Germination to Harvesting

    Hi everyone.
I was wondering if anyone had some simple information on how long different types of veggies take between sowing and germinating and then between germinating and when they are ready to harvest. I've been looking round on websites and things but it's all very confusing.

at the moment i am growing

    beetroot
    cabbage (greyhound)
    purple sprouting broccolli
    sweetcorn
    lettuce
    carrots
    climbing french beans
    peas (not sown yet)

so it would be good to know about these but information on any type of veg would be great as i don't know what i'll grow in future. I planted all this stuff and then realised i don't know how long they will take to develop

    please help!!

Have you looked on the backs of the packets?
Have you googled the different varieties?

Even with that information, it still depends on the weather, the soil, the rain, the windy, the temperature, fertilisation etc. Different varieties will also have different times to harvest.

Having said that - it is usually all ready about 5 minutes after you leave for a 2 week holiday.

When the answer is "it depends" the best measure I reckon is keeping an eye on them and gaining experience. It depends on the variety, the weather, conditions in your garden, whether they get attacked by anything, all sorts. And time to harvest depends on what you want to harvest e.g. we planted greyhoud cabbage in April (sown a few weeks before that) and have been harvesting spring greens from them for a few weeks, but they are starting to heart up now so it is a much longer wait if you want hearts. Same with things like beetroot, carrots and onions - whether you want big ones or little ones - big ones take longer. Mostly, be patient, and they'll be ready eventually
Warning: I have a dangerous tendency to act like I know what I'm talking about.

Which is why you need a second sowing of courgettes as they are all marrows by the time you get back.

Maybe you should take up knitting instead

Seriously, get a copy of the Vegetable Expert (Hessayon) about a fiver on Amazon.co.uk. Worth it's weight in gold.
