  • My sucesses so far....

First photo shows my humungous gorgeous looking (and very tasty) cabbages. Never grown them before and am well pleased with the results. Oliver took this photo when I mentioned to someone on the phone I was about to cut our first for dinner but was gutted that it would spoil the effect!

Second photo shows the smallest of our three beds and the greenhouse which contains 3 cucumbers one of which now reaches the roof but the 2nd and 3rd are definatly that - a fourth is just outside having run out of space for height growing things but I may put it on the staging and just let it ramble as its just been stopped in its tracks by being outside. he toms havent ripened yet so cannot comment on them but the aubergines look like they will do me proud - just wondering if I should reward them with repotting or if that would set them back too much at this late stage?

Third photo shows that I dont have to take up valuable plot space with my runners as they are indeed (based on number of flowers which should all have been set nicely in the last couple of days rain) just as happy in my giant container. It could of course all be down to the bottom half being filled with bunny bedding full of poo!!!

"just wondering if I should reward them with repotting or if that would set them back too much at this late stage"

If they are in fruit I'd be inclined to leave them. I reckon when I think "Crickey, that plant is dry I only watered it X hours ago" that is an indication that it has filled its pot!

Mine are in about 10" pots I think. Anything less than 6" is probably a bit small, but if you are at home to water multiple times during the day, if needed, then I think they should be OK.

Having said that, repotting doesn't need to disturb the plant. Pot it on without removing the old pot. Then take the plant + old pot out, and you will have a perfect hole for it. Knock it out of its old pot, don't disturb the roots, pot it in the hole, push down a bit to make sure its in contact with the compost all round. Add a bit more compost around the top to finish off. Add water ... and eat!

Thanks K - not drying out too much but the number of flowers makes me think its doing alot of work for not much effort. I may start stopping the flowers soon as I know you should only have a certain number of fruits or trusses on other things in the greenhouse.

Suggest you first make sure they have actually set some fruit

Ssshhh dont give them pesky pigeons any ideas - dont know why they dont go for mine?...or the peas, sugar snap? Perhaps the ones in this area have more refined taste? - in which case what do they eat?!

Those cabbages are monstrous!!! Everything looks so beautiful, especially the scarlet runner bean flowers.
