  • Plot is now a pond!!

    Some advise please.

I've taken on a new allotment plot in the ;ast couple of months, It was covered with couch grass, I have killed this which is not the problem. I've turned over some of the earth which looks great, and used a tiller to do upto half of the plot.
After yesterdays downpor I now have about 1/4 of the plot with surface water about a couple of inches. enough for a few ducks!!

No one elses plot has this abeit soft /stoggy.

I wanted to know how to make this drain more easily? Is it the roots of the couch grass that has weaved its way around and made no drainage available, or is it the fact Ive just tilled it the day before?

If you have turned the soil over then that should have assisted in drainage not made it worse. Sounds as if you may have to consider some raised beds to alleviate poor drainage. Once you have semi permanant paths you could incorporate drainage channels within your path system to get water to run away.

Ground that has plants growing in it will also generally cope better with sudden downpours than bare ground. Or so I believe anyway!
Warning: I have a dangerous tendency to act like I know what I'm talking about.
