What do I do with my onions next?

Hi All,

I'm growing some onions from seed for the 1st time this year & am really happy with how they are doing, bulb is swelling up nicely....... but what do I do now; leave them, will they just get bigger & then dry out and have a skin like shop bought ones???????? Dumb I know but I've not a clue and dont want to lose them - Help

Yes, that's basically it. Mine are just finishing up now ... yellow leaves, flopping over, roots are loosening from the soil.
When they're totally loose, I am brushing off the dirt and leaving them in the sun (!) for a few days before plaiting and hanging from my shed ceiling.

Any chance you could share your tips on plaiting please Two Sheds?? Many thanks.

I have just had my first go at plaiting......
Take three onions bulbs upwards and pass the stalks over each other once in a plait (left to centre, right to center) Add another onion to each outside stalk and pass over once in a plait as before. Be careful to keep each set of stalks separate.
Continue until you are horribly tangled or have a lovelt neat plait for storage.
(sorry if this makes no sense or is not the official way of doing things, it worked for me!)

I had to harvest 75% of my onions today. They had fallen over last week but the heavy rain had started to rot the necks so they are now in netting hanging in the shed.

Also harvested one of my tubs of first early (rocket) potatoes, not a bad crop but will probably leave the rest for another couple of weeks.

Harvested my overwintering onions today, also the garlic and some of the shallots. I know the overwintered onions won't store for long, but my spring planted sets are growing well and I'm looking forward to harvesting them August/September.

I presume these are your overwintered type?
