  • Carrots without tops!

I have in past years done very well growing carrots so this year went to town and sowed several packets of carrot fly resistant varieties. Unfortunately I have had very disappointing results! Many have not germinated and those that have do not have the bushy green growth of carrot top that I am used to. So far I have managed to harvest 4 carrots!! They are planted amongst my onions and with marigold so I am hoping the carrot fly is not the culprit, especially as I bought the more expensive resistant variety.

Any ideas what I've done wrong or why this has happened?

My Resistafly are growing away nicely, plenty of foliage on them.
Perhaps slugs have been munching away your carrots before you get to see them? You could try sowing some in loo rolls, and once they've germinated, plant them out (intact).

I would say that slugs, snails or small birds have been having your carrot tops.

You only see carrot fly damage on the roots - they are not interested in the foliage.

It is now possible to buy organic slug pellets which do not contain the persistent chemicals that can poison other wildlife - they may be worth a try.
