  • Grazing Rye - What to do?

I bought a big bag (2kg) of Grazing Rye. I have no idea what to do with it!!

    I know it's a green manure, but that's it.

Sow it! You've bought enough to cover about ten football fields I reckon 250g covers 15 sq. metres.

Good overwintering crop. Sow Aug to Nov and dig in during early spring. Can inhibit germination of following crops so leave for a month before sowing your plants.

Thanks!!! Shall I just sow in rows, or just chuck it about?

Can I suggest that you sow it in rough rows rather than 'we plough the fields and scatter' stylee - then when it grows to about 6-8" and you want to dig it in you can get your spade in between the rows - makes digging it in about a million times easier!

And if it's in rows, you stand some chance of knowing which is your rye, and which is weeds

One other tip with all green manures, just make sure you dig it in before there is any chance of them setting seed.
