You are stranded on a desert island but able to grow your own (thank goodness!). Out of ten packets of vegetable seed you can take one packet of seeds with you - which would you choose?

Pumpkin. If it grew big enough I could hollow out and use as a boat to get off the island

Pumpkin for me. Once I've eaten the contents I could carve a face and create myself a friend to keep me company a la Tom Hanks in Castaway.A simple dude trying to grow veg. http://haywayne.blogspot.com/

onion for me,it can be used to flavour most things, and if you get hay fever from the pollen,it should help clear the nostrils, especially if you get a strong un,maybe a bit of garlic for the vampires,he,he he,being in the onion family?sigpicAnother nutter ,wife, mother, nan and nanan, love my growing places, seed collection and sharing, also one of these

Potato, the one thing on the island you may struggle getting is carbs, there will be fish from the sea, coconuts obviously, but there is little in the way of starch and the body needs carbs to run properly. So purely because my body would miss them, potatoes. Plus there are more recipes for potatoes than shrimp!!(forest gump)
Potato also stores very well in sand....aah not just a pretty face eh!!Last edited by Mikey; 21-07-2008, 01:55 PM.I'm only here cos I got on the wrong bus.

Sweetcorn I think!
It's not ideally suited to Geordieland but I might have a chance with it on a desert island!
Corn seed can be kept for the followwing year (in case I'm there a while!)
It dries ok.It is suited to a variety of recipes, you can make flour from it, it is an energy food and most of all............I love it!My Majesty made for him a garden anew in order
to present to him vegetables and all beautiful flowers.- Offerings of Thutmose III to Amon-Ra (1500 BCE)

I'm with T-lady regarding the asparagus seeds, but I don't think I'd like to stay on a desert island for 3 years waiting for a good crop that only lasts 6 weeks . Think it'll have to be pumpkin. After all, you can have it savoury or sweet and the seeds are good "nibbles" too. The leaves and stems might be good dried to make a roof on a house (who am I kidding!!! ) The empty shell can be made into a scary mask to scare away any animals that might want to eat me before I get chance to eat themMy girls found their way into my heart and now they nest there

I agree with onion because it 'goes with' everything, although sweetcorn also has advantages. You can let it ripen into 'real' grain and make bread, you can save seeds from the fully ripened stage (to ensure continuity of supply), it would make a tolerable staple.Flowers come in too many colours to see the world in black-and-white.
