  • The joys of growing Organic Veg

You know i used to think that growers charging a higher price for organic veg was a big rip off. I naively thought that 'surely it must be more costly to use chemicals' and 'how can it be more labor intensive to not use chemicals'

This year has been a big eye opener for me i can tell you that!!.

Its no wonder you pay a premium in the shops for Organically grown veg. I now know that growing the plants is actually the easy bit!! I have had excellent germination rate , i have raised good , robust healthy plants from seed in modules, i have tended and watered them , and lovingly planted them out and armed myself with the knowledge to raise them to full adulthood so that i can feed my family with freshly grown, chemical free , nutritious veg. Growing the plants is a complete doddle, easy peezy.
The hard bit is trying to stop every other flippin creature in the land from eating them afor i can !!

Slugs, caterpillars , birds, aphids,...you name it an they all think they have a right to a free meal of 'MY VEG' afor me.

Nobody told me that slugs were like the 'Army of Anubis' and for every slug you slay ten more arise from the earth , and my wee daughter does not understand why mummy's face turns to pure evil as she swats wildly at the pretty white butterfly's landing on the cabbage plants .

I hold my hands up to them organic veg growers who can produce cabbage after cabbage for the supermarket shelves without even a tiny slug hole in them. £2 for a organic cabbage is a bargain price!

Its taken me 16 weeks of battling the powers that be, the elements and armies of creatures day and night to produce my lovely cabbages . I might give some away to friends and family for free , but if you want to buy one it will cost you 50 quid each ok..lol

    Joys indeed
I've resigned myself to sharing with the critters - and investing in some netting for next year!!

I have resorted to pulling out all of my brassicas, because they had either bolted or were a harbor for cabbage worms and other pests. Don't even get me started on the corn earworms!!! ARRRGGGGHHHH! But, on the bright side, I feel right proud when I am staring at a huge casserole chock full of goodies from the garden. Now I just need to learn how to make salt, pepper, and cheese!

£2 for an organic cabbage ? You ARE being ripped off. I grow and sell organic veg and the most I charge retail for an organically grown cabbage (specifically a red cabbage) is £1.60. I normally retail them at between £1.00 and £1.20

I toil all day on the lotty to produce the food. Then I go home and spend an hour cleaning, scraping, peeling & cooking it.

It's gone in 3 mins flat ~ straight down the hatch, doesn't even touch the sides
