salt stress on tomatoes

Did anyone read the article in the Metro yesterday on the tommelier (hee hee, tomato taster) who said that sea water in the water table can make the tomatoes sweeter?

Am wondering whether to try a very dilute solution on one of my plants...would really need to have 2 growing in eactly the same conditions though and give one the saline solution to test the difference.

I'd love to hear people's tomato growing tips - I generally have a few different kinds all growing together so presumably don't end up with true types when I save the seeds for the next year.

I read the article although all the way to work I was wanting a fresh tomato with salt on mmmmmmmmm

Unless you are growing heritage types with huge flowers, your tomatoes probably will come true from seed. The pollen is produced on the inside of the anther cone and the female bit that receives the pollen is inside this. So it can only pollinate itself (hence the usual advice to tap the plants when you go into the greenhouse, to dislodge the pollen so it falls on the femal bite (stigma? Never did biology at school, it clashed with maths!)
The huge, big-flowerred types however, can have the femal bit sticking out the end of the anther cone so it's possible that these will cross pollinate if you have more than one of this type.
