    i've just planted out a row of early nantes to try for a latish crop but will they need any protection outdoors

    Hi Ya, I have just done the same, but in a pot, did read earlier on another thread that they would towards to the end of the year, (fleece cover) sorry for sounding a bit vague !!

      long as the soil doesnt freeze they should be ok...you will prob have picked them before the hard frosts come

        As long as you've got some fleece to hand once the autumn sets in, you can always stick it over them if a cold night is forecast. Carrots aren't all that tender though, from what I can make out - so should be fine

          I put some early Nantes in last October and left them in the ground throughtout the winter. I was amazed that they survived and we did actually eat them in about Feb/March.....not very big but edible just the same. As yours are in much earlier they should be fine.
