So Lucky (So far!)

My first year of Veg growing and I've been so lucky...
No probs with slugs, snails or other nasties... Until now

Yesterday I thought I would have a nibble at some Kale seedlings. Just about to chow down on a leaf when I notice... EGGS

My first go at brassicas but I can guess who layed them.

How should I get rid ?

Just rub them off Maf, with gloves on if you're squeemish
Or you can wait til they turn into tiny caterpillars & pick them off. But I'd just rub ALL the eggs off, and then cover the plants up!

sometimes netting is worse ... if a sneaky butterfly gets inside the net (I got 3 in mine y'day) and lays without you noticing ... you will think your net is keeping them out but the caterpillars are munching away safe as houses.

I am whipping off all my nets today for a thorough weeding/squishing session.

That's true - Or if the netting touches the plant, the butterfly can lay through the hole onto the plants. But, I invested in Enviromesh a few years ago, and never had a single caterpillar on plants covered with that. It's a bit expensive initially, but this is my 3rd year of using the same 2 pieces so I'm happy with it

I've had to go through every one of my kale plants today and must have squished 100s of the blighters, every size from yellow eggs up to great big fat wigglers. Ugh. At least 3 varieties as well (smooth bright green ones, hairy green/black ones, and skinny yellowish green ones). Some of the hairy ones had even escaped onto the rocket - grrrr

That'll teach me to take me eye off the ball, huh...

PS I found that, unlike slugs, they drown really quickly, so if you do ent up with big hairy ones that you don't fancy squishing, just drop them into a couple of inches of water - they don't swim!
