Lettuce definitely like cooler conditions, the wont even germinate if it is to hot. If your seedlings are dying off then it could be overcrowding and lack of air circulation which often leads to damping off.

Oh how I wish it was! No, it's East Anglia, UK. I should have looked at your location first.

I have moved the seed tray to under the courgettes and split the dormant plants between the french beans and tomatoes. Lets see what happens..........
Thank you for all of the advice.

just get seed trays and fill with compost put around twenty lettuce seeds in each(spaced regularly) water and leave in a shady place. After two or three days they should have germinated.Give them a bit of tender care and you will get lovely mini lettuces

Dunno why you bother. I hate lettuce. I grow it for Himself's sandwiches and the budgie like a bit but I could happily live without it.

I have now sown my third lot of Lettuce this year. The first two came on well, by just by sowing in six inch pots and then transplanting into growbags. Had twenty-seven from my first sowing and they have all gone well. I sowed a mixture of Webbs Wonderful and Great Lakes.
Can't believe the difference in these compared to the Iceberg rubbish imported from Spains, we get from the shops. Glad I made the decision to grow my own for the first time in about seven or eight years.
