  • Killing Strawberry Plants

Just incase anyone wants to try this - DON'T

I sillily thought that if I put solid Tomato around the strawberries that it might help them to grow instead it has almost killed them all.

Just so you know I did this as my sister put strawberry food on her tomatoes and they grew well so I thought that it would work well the opposite way round.

Hope that this stops anyone else making the same mistake

I think it must be - tomato feed wouldn't harm strawberries.

I assume you mean solid tomato feed? I can't see why it would have killed them, unless you used far, far too much?! I sprinkled tomato feed granules around my strawberry plants when they were fruiting and it did them no harm

Yes, Sorry I did mean Solid Tomato Feed - loads of little granuals.

I asume i must have used way too much, but luckily i have had many shoots off older strawberry plants this year so i have managed to get a fair few new plants off them, so they have replaced the ones i killed.

I also found out that my husband "thought" that all my plants were looking a little dry and so decided to water them in midday sun, 'Idiot', so i think that may have caused at least some of the damage as quite a lot of the other plants went brown, especially the tom plants which were thriving the day before. Men!!! Well Men who don't know anything about gardening!!!!

              Whoa there a moment.

Now, if you over fertilize a plant, you are creating an environment where water moves out of a plant's cells to the stronger solution 'outside' the plant, the fertilizer, the condition is called reverse osmosis so the effect is a wilting plant, perhaps your husband saw your plants looking limp and watered for thinking that's what they needed when if fact the situation was not his creating.

This should be a lesson to everyone to actually read the instructions on the pack!! When using fertiliser granules you need to use far less than you would probably think. If in doubt about how much an ounce (or so many grams) then weigh some out on your kitchen scales so you know what it looks like.
