I had intended to plant some leeks but was too busy to sow them at the right time, so decided to buy little plants from the nursery - now can't find them anywhere!!! Is it too late to sow some anyway? Likewise, Spring greens/sprouting broc/spring cabbage. Really cross but have had manic few months.

You can certainly sow some spring cabbage now. I put some in a small pot last week and they are through already. I'll transplant them into the garden next month some time.Whoever plants a garden believes in the future.

I think it all comes down to what size you're hoping for,You prob won't get any massive leeks if you sow them now but then often the small ones are the tenderest.later sowings obviously won't have such a long growing period but I'd say it's worth going for it~I also think our climate has changed so much it's worth experimenting with sow dates.
we found a little nursery/farmshop that sells a huge variety of ready started mini plants out in the sticks.A lot of the main nurseries only seem to sell the basic spring greens.(around here anyway!)the fates lead him who will;him who won't they drag.
Happiness is not having what you want, but wanting what you have.xx

I'd rather have lots of baby leeks all tender and lovely than a few larger ones...so I sow regularly and pick them sooner. I left aload last year to get bigger and they all flippin bolted - which means they were tougher to eat. I have just harvested the flowers of 7 which I potted on so that I could save the seeds. The trick is getting a longer blanched stem in my opinion...so I now plant in troughs and earth up as well.

This all sounds encouraging. Will plant some this week - we're away for a couple of weeks (which always scares me with the veggies coping all on their own - well with a little help from my friends - cue for a song), maybe leeks and Spr cabb will be through by the time we get back.....
