  • Black Russian toms

I`ve got 2 plants with very big toms which are turning colour. What colour should they be when picked? At the mo they are a funny dull red & green on top - certainly not black.

They finish up a sort of mahogany brown colour. Lots of these big brown/black toms have green shoulders even when ripe. I didn't actually rate them much - I found them an interesting ingredient in a salad but rather bland. I'm hard to please in the tomato stakes though!

      Hi
The Black Russian Tomatoes will be deep purple and sometime a bit of green but no black at all but they are indeed very tasty. I had good result with them.

Ah hah Flummery, someone who is hard to please in the tomato stakes must be the right person to ask 'which are your favourites'? I always have the best of intentions with tomatoes, but always end up growing whatever I can get hold of - I never seem to plan far enough ahead, but maybe this year......

Mine are still green but I do have an awful lot of them!

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I do like Sungold - orange cherry tom - though some find its skin too tough. I also like Red Alert for an outdoor bush tom. Green Zebra. Tigerella.
However, taste is a very personal thing. I like them a bit acid. I find very sweet toms too bland.

Thanks Flummery, several people have mentioned Sungold, so I think I'll look for that for next year. Tigerella, I'm growing for the first time - it looks wonderful. I 'googled' Green Zebra, that looks terrific, another one for my list!
