  • HELP have I got potato blight????

I have some potatoes which have been in flower and the leaves have now begun turning yellow with brown patches on (duh I thought this was because they were ready to dig up) but I have found that some of the potatos have what I can only describe as small yellowing circles - sort of like small open wounds on them. (If I was clever enough to put a photo on I would but I'm learning at this as well!!)

Is this the infamous potato blight and if so does this mean my potato plot is infectious? How do I get rid of it?????? Any advice would be thoroughly welcome.........

Could just be a maturing haulm and a bit of potato scab. Do the spuds smell vile? They will if they have blight and it's spread down to the tuber. I think (hope) you don't need to worry.

No can't say I can smell anything but on some of the tubers where the yellowing 'wound' is larger they look to be turning a bit mouldy - could it be that I have just left them in the ground too long then do you think?

Unfortunately I haven't a clue - I am a newbie and my OH came home from a nearby nursery earlier this year with a little bag on seed potatoes which I thought were some type of white potatoe - no idea what variety - strange thing is I have now dug them up and they are red!?!?!

I was just thinking that they might be an early potato which could well have been in a bit longer than was good for it. Sounds like scab to me. I'd just get eating them pronto!

This link has a picture of a tuber with blight, although it shows the inside rather than the outside, but it doesn't sound like yours.

Thank you that has helped a lot, no mine don't look like that so I am very relieved. I have been doing a bit of googling and I believe Flummery is perfectly correct in her diagnosis, it appears to be potato scab. Thanks again, I don't know what I would do without you all.

Some of my earlies had scab. I just scrapped them off and they were still delicious.

Yes, I scrape it off too! I don't expect supermarket style perfection. I just like to know there's nothing been sprayed on my food.
