I managed to get some going some years ago - reached about 12 inches tall and then neglect set in - just like Lizzy - no-one to blame save moi!
If you don't have a container readily available you can leave it on a windowsill and the shoots will start to set - just like chitting a spud. Don't overwater - I think that was my downfall - I really must try again.
Once established they make a delightful foliage plant with the added bonus of the root harvest in due course. Not sure if the culinary ginger flowers or not - but there are ornatmental which do - so who knows perhaps it will flower also.

Yes it is - it was closed for many years and within the last 11 yrs - since I've lived here - can't remember exactly when - it was refurbished and opened for the summer months. Its gots one of those sail type shades which can be raised aloft when the sun is strong which is quite attractive. They've made a good job of it and managed to retain much of the charm of its art deco look. I believe it was already a listed building so certain standards and building styles had to remain in situ.
The area to the rear has also been developed with a nice family pub and car park to add to the attraction of the area.
Another landmark you may remember is the Grand Ocean Hotel. This has been closed for some 2-3 yrs now and is being redeveloped into flats. Work is well under way and I expect that first occupation will probably happen towards the end of this year early next. Parking is now dreadful around the area - yes sleepy Saltdean - and with it being on the Brighton side of Longridge I Expect that little/no benefit will be felt by the Telscombe/Lewes side. I still think it looks like a hotel though in many ways. There have been a number of developments round here which have the appearance of what I think look like trashy time share appartments - hence still looking like a hotel.
When were you last in the area? See you've got a nice place to rest your feet these days!Last edited by quark1; 09-08-2008, 08:41 PM.

Tracy, I'm having a go at growing some. The foliage is now about 12" high. It likes to be damp, but not wet, and hot but not in direct sun. I keep it in the conservatory in the shade of peppers and aubergines.
I don't know how well it will do but so far so good.
And yes, you can cut that supermarket ginger into bits and plant them with the green nodes above the surface and hope they will shoot. Not all of mine did and it takes a while so be patient. Good luck.
From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.
