  • When to sow onions

I've been reading various threads over the last few weeks where people have been saying that they are sowing their onions now or have already sown them like last month.... but the packets for mine say to sow September.

I'm now starting to get seriously paranoid about it. The varieties I plan to sow are Hi-Keeper and North Holland Bloodred Redmate.

Should I get out and sow them tomorrow, or am I best to abide by the instructions and leave is a few weeks yet?

    Help!!

You could do both of course???

I don't get hung up on dates, and blow me - it looks pretty septemberish out there today!

As I've said in other posts, onions don't seem to be upset by frosts, they just slow down. As I want mine as big as possible before the winter, mine were sown [and some dropped when I dropped the packet on the ground] about a month ago. But then again I sow year round anyway. My april sown ones will be growing for another 2 months and hopefully will be big enough to start eating over the winter.

Thank you Zazen, I think you've said what I needed to hear to soothe the paranoia... I'll sow some tomorrow and then some more in a few weeks.

Hey I know about onion paranoia!!! Who doesn't?

I used sets last year and this, and half of my red baron sets have started to shrivel up and the other half are looking fine. The ones on the left hand side are bad and the ones on the right hand side are good.

When i prepped the ground, I dug the whole lot over and the only difference was the ones on the right hand [good] side got some cut down mustard from my courtyard garden and some coffee grounds - both to add organic. the other half didn't.

So, now all my onions will get more organic inc coffee grounds whenever I can.
