  • Mistaken Identity

I must admit, i have obviously not been paying some of my veg enough attention.

had the grandparents round tonight, which meant the routine inspection of the veg patch by my grandad.

'the leeks are coming on well!'

    'um...what leeks?'

'those ones there' *points to onions*

'no.. those are onions, i just bought them as seedlings later than the ones over there that mom and dad planted for me, which is why they arn't lying down yet'

    'nah. they're leeks dear'

*takes a closer look* 'um.... actually..... your right arnt you?!?! they are leeks....'

looks like ive got a mighty fine crop of leeks now anyway, just a shortage on onions, which i tend to eat rather alot more of!

however, in two minds about complaining to the garden center that sold me 2 trays of 'onion seedling' plugs. do i go back and complain?!

'Oi, you sold me leeks labelled as onions! what u gonna do about it?!'

and i wondered why they'd all gotten so thick, and werent showing any signs of flopping, yet the moment my grandad suggested such a thing, i realised they were totally different to each other- shows how much presumption rules over observation even when presented with veg planted next to each other in the same raised bed!

Yes I would go back and complain. Not that you are particularly unhappy about having leek plants, as opposed to onions, but you should point out that what they sold you was not what the plants were labelled as.

If they don't know what they are selling is not what the label says, they are probably liable under the Trades Description Act, and would appreciate being informed. I don't think garden cerntres deliberately sell wrongly labelled plants. I think it is their suppliers that are at fault. but I would certainly go back and if not complain, point out that what you bought was not what you wanted/expected, ie on the label

An example, I bought two yellow million bell petunias this Spring. One is yellow, the other is bright red.

I think we 'pays our money and we takes our choice', but in a lot of cases of Spring bedding/container plants what it says on the label is not necessarily the plant in the pot, similarly with your leeks/onions

heh ta, i think i was being more sarcastic in my imagination of what i would say to them!

in reality i was thinking a small trip to the garden center, explaining what happened to sales assistant, and that if i'd wanted some leeks i would have bought some leeks, and thus they arn't really of any use to me (i will use the regardless ofcourse, but im strugglnig to think of much use other than leeky mash, casserole and to go in with chicken stock).

then i was thinking i might ask if they would be willing to give me some onion sets as re-imbursement, seeing as the season is over and they no longer stock onion seedlings. Only problems is, i dont have the receipt!

I recon there may have been a seed mix up at the suppliers or whoever labelled the boxes made a mistake... its easily done! if it was a seed mix up i wouldnt be surprised if they've had a few people complain to them about leek onions!

You can pull leeks as soon as you are happy with their girth.
I usually wait until they are at least 1" in diameter though

oh i would be happy with their girth if i could get the darned things to grow lol ...... i have sown a whole packet of leek seeds in different places in the garden, and some indoors, and currently have ..... 6 blades of grass sized leeks from them ...... a kind soul sent me some pencil thick leeks, that i haven't killed yet, but i'm not holding my breath.

well mine have some good healthy girth, with a couple of weaker looking specimens.

I pulled two of the leeks today as a trial run to give to some freinds- they smelled awesome (this is coming from a non leek lover lol) and freind was rather chuffed with them!

how is it a leek lover has so much trouble growing leeks, yet a leek hater has a 95% success rate however, i didnt sow them myself ofcourse, but they were only wee little things when i planted them out, looked a little like spring onions to be honest, maybe even thinner than that!
