  • Late/Christmas Potato Planting

I've got my seed spuds for my Christmas supply

The leftlet I got with them said that they should be planted in the first week of August and no later!

We have had such rubbish weather that I physically couldn't plant them last weekend

If I plant them this weekend, they'll still be ok, won't they? I can't see 1 week making that much difference to them?

    Should be fine.
Can you tell where you got them, cos people will ask!

If you can container plant them and have facility to bring indoors or place in a sheltered spot outside away from worst frosts you should be OK.

Can't think one week will make much of a difference - just produce spuds a tad smaller.

They are going outside, but I have fleece etc for them when it gets cold. We also don't have a great deal of frost as we're on the coast - it's too salty and sandy for it!

Suttons are doing a good range of Chrimbo pots aswell.

          I got 2kg of Charlottes for £7.95

Apparently don't need chitting and can go in at this time of year because it is SUPPOSED to be warm enough to start them off.

Growining potatoes in containers and the shaws are enormous! They are main crop and my son refers to them as the triffids. Growing them in rubble bags well watered but the plants stand 5 feet tall and are lush and very vigourous. Is this due to poor light, north facing in central Scotland or is there some other reason for this growth?

Not got around to planting mine yet either (they're currently sat in the bottom of the drinks fridge) but hopefully will find the time one evening this week as I'm hoping I'll be able to be up the new lottie at the weekend (and yes, I know I'm going on about it a lot but I'm excited!)

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

as i grew mine in pots i have saved some to seed from this summers crop and they are chitting in the utility room but not ready yet the will be planted in the greenhouse when the toms have finished you can grow spuds all year round but not always in the ground do you get the best results in cold weather if you live in more northenly areas. i will still gets pots at christmas as my grand dad always did this, the dont like the ground here after mid november
