    Is it just me or does kohl rabi taste like cabbage stalks?

    It's a brassica, that's what it's meant to taste like.

      I've read and heard of kohlrabi, never seen it selling in shops, never seen seeds for it (we eat a lot of potatoes! - see Location, above)

        Capsid - I know, but it just tastes so MUCH like cabbage stalks... Why not just eat cabbage stalks?! (I know - cos they're not that nice lol)

          I've never seen them for sale in supermarkets or greengrocers. Here's a pic of mine.

            Do you eat the stalks raw or cooked? Cooked kohlrabi is delicious.

              I cooked it. Have tried several different ways, always just tastes - cabbagey - and not in a good way, more like a school-dinners taste!

              (Can you eat kohlrabi raw?)

              Is it just what the stuff tastes like or can anyone suggest a recipe or cooking method that will bring out the best in it? I'm loathe to give up on anything that's this easy to grow, even if it does take an expert to cook it nice

                PS I got them in my veg box a couple of times, before I gave up veg boxes and took up veg growing

                If I remember right the leaflet that used to come with the box said something like: "If you're wondering why we sent you an alien this week, that'll be the kohlrabi!"

                    Young ones, peeled and sliced, are lovely in salads. My daughter adores them, but then she, like me, likes cabbage, cauli and broccoli stalks, as long as the tough outer bits are removed! They do get stronger flavoured if they get older, a bit hotter, similar to radish I think.
                    I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!
                    Now a little Shrinking Violet.

                          If you harvest KR when it is the size of a tennis ball you can peel and cut into chunks for a salad. They taste quite radishy but less of a peppery aftertaste. I've been using KR in chunks in shepherds pies as well. Apparently they are nice when larger with a white sauce but mine never get that far
