I'm looking to grow asparagus. I understand I need to buy crowns and that I need to wait a year till harvesting. I've been told about Autumn planting varieties. What is the best varieties and the best time to plant.
GYO has an offer on asparagus crowns for autumn planting in the September mag. You don't cut any the first year, then only one or two spears from each crown the second year - so it's three years before you can get a real crop - but it's well worth the wait!

So laugh insanely, love truly and forgive quickly!
It's definitely worth the wait. Mine went in in the spring, so I can take one or two spears next year if I'm careful, and then eat it properly the year after.
Trouble is I start looking at it and want to eat it NOW! Serious exercise of willpower required!
