I think that next year I'll plant marigolds everywhere!!!! I may have to get another plastic greenhouse.

Any ideas on how I can improve my yield next year? I have tried two packs of seed, one of which was after the 'Slug-wars', involving metaldehyde!!
I followed my dad's advice which was - sow them in trays, and let them get BIG before you put them out. The slugs love them. Next year I will need to sow much earlier than this year cos the didn't grow as fast as my plants, and weren't there to save them! Oops...

I've got Tagetes Patula Nana (Bolero) setting seed now. It seems the slugs pollinated them! Send me a SAE and I'll set you up with more seed than you need. I put them around my cabbages. I have also read lots of stuff on the internet about this subject. I think (if my memory serves me) that beans don't like the French ones and that the English (pot marigold) is good with Tomatoes.

I'll also second the previous poster who said to sow them in trays. The trays do okay outside on the ground even as the slugs seem to avoid them. I'd leave them until they have their first flower bud.

            Tagetes erecta - african marigold
Tagetes patula - "french" marigold (Oillet d'Inde)
horrible smelly weedy little things although are supposed to be good for something - cant remember what- mine tend to get eaten by slugs immediately although i have raised some from seed this year

and different species altogether the star of the marigold world
            POT MARIGOLD
            Calendula
I have this all over the garden.....along with nasturtiums ....they provide colour and you can eat them.
Is this what people have been calling ' English Marigold'?

              Yes, English marigold is Calendula.

Also Tagetes lucida and Tagetes minuta are 2 other species, often in cultivation.
