    I have been more or less self-s

    ufficient on pots, for quite a few years, regardless of the weather.

    As someone earlier mentioned it is quite possible to get a load of spuds from one plant.

    The most important thing is variety, you have to trial them, to see what does well in your place, we all have our favs, but they won't do well neccessarily, where you are.

    But , a space demanding crop though it is, if you plant 10 first and 10 second earlies, you might just end up stuggling to eat the crop without storing.

      i never bother with 2nd earlies as the firsts are enough to keep us going until the maincrop is ready

        I've just dug up my picassa main crop - the bed they were in is 12' x 4' and I planted 6 rows of 4 - so that's 12" between spuds, and 2' between rows.

        The yield was 36kg

          Quick update;
          From 20 tubers of Desiree planted in a 4ftx10ft bed, we've harvested today 110 potatoes, 80 of them at least the size of a fist, some twice that size! And that's with the tops cut down early due to blight.

            Thanks everybody, this is all really useful. The current plan is one 4' x 8' bed for earlies and then 2 more for main crop ie 16' (possibly a bit more) for main crop so looks like we should get plenty. Now just got to decide what varieties to grow (oh yes, and do a load of clearing....)

            Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

            Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

              You really should find space for a few Pink Fir Apples,just lifted my first of the season,the flavour is superb.You don't get huge crops,but hot or cold they are worth it I think,they have that new potatoes flavour that normally comes from the earlies.
