i am half way through building my raised veggie plot and a friend has advised me to put a gravel moat around the outside because the slugs dont like to crawl across it. I'm not sure about gravel but maybe a no-mans land of something else ? all ideas appreciated......

hi
i have gravel paths all around my raised beds because i too read that slugs don't like gravel. not true!! i've still been invaded by the b****y things. i've tried oatmeal and bran but nothing seems to work. just bought pet and child friendly slug pellets and they do seem to be working. good luck!

Slugs are supposed to not like slithering across anything sharp or dry, hence the recommendations for crushed eggshells, bran, sharp gravel etc. In my experience very little stops the little b*****s. In fact this morning I went out onto the lawn with a bucket of salty water (marigolds on) and turned about 35 of them into slug soup. Have sprinkled the borders with blue pellets but they're still around.

They aren't supposed to like crossing strips of copper which apparently give them a small electric shock! My Majesty made for him a garden anew in order

I've put copper tape around all my pots and it seems to have done the trick, especially with snails (Nemasys doesn't kill snails, just slugs). I'm thinking about fixing some to the tops of my raised beds after I've done the Nemasys treatment next yearMy girls found their way into my heart and now they nest there
