Tomatoes STILL green - will they eventually redden?

Am in Scotland and not had many hot sunny days.

It was only a month ago that I got any tomatoes appearing. I've fed with tomorite a couple of times now and stripped off all the bottom leaves to let light in.

Tomatoes are still small - but is there anything I can do to help them redden?

Will they ever redden or is it too late in the season?

mine are huge and at last starting to redden and i am in the south! i had some fall off a couple of weeks ago i put them on a plate in the kitchen with a banana on top and they are reddening now, may be worth trying the banana later on!

Don't be too quick to strip off the leaves. The plants need them to produce and ripen the fruit. I only take mine off when they start to go yellow. You should have time to ripen fruit yet, it's only August. Where are your plants - Greenhouse or outside?

Hi, I'm the same as you - had lots of green toms in Scotland (have about 20 plants). but...

My neighbour, who has 20+ years experience in growing veg, feeds his toms once they are of good size with a slightly weaker solution every day (His are now lovely and red). I have started doing this in the last week, and guess what - they are starting to ripen.

Your tomatoes will ripen Tracky. Once they start to turn red it happens quite quickly. And any you don't manage to ripen on the plant will redden once you take them indoors. The green ones you are left with are nice fried. Well I like them anyway.

Ours too are still green and we havn't had many sunny days here.

But give it time and they should turn red eventually.

mine are still all green too here in soggy west Ireland.... had 1 ripe one so far

My toms are in the greenhouse and still very small, many still have their flowers. Like Tracy I'm in Scotland, any chance of them swelling up a little too?

I wouldn't worry. My tomatoes are still green. I just don't think the sun has been there this year. But we've still got a long time before frost ( even in Scotland? ). With regards to tomato plants still flowering, mine too, but you should have stopped them by now though ( at the growing tip ) if they're indeterminate.

Ive just been given a huge hanging tomato plant by a friend. Her garden gets little sun. Got a couple of small green toms and loads of flowers. re above post, (dunno how to quote yet ) how do i "stop them"? Should i be pinching the flowers out?

Mine are all still green. The ones at my allotment are very green compared to the ones in my garden. I have just yesterday pinched out the growing tips and started to mulch them with comfrey leaves ala advice from that Grow Your Own Veg tv show. I hope that helps. I refuse to buy any more tomatoes! I have ten plants going!
