  • potatoes that produce tomatoes?? am I going mad??

an allotment near mine has a whole row of potatoes on it, that have tomatoes coming off the haulms. I kid you not!!! I know theyre from the same family...but Ive never seen or heard of this before. Can anyone shed any light on this so I can move on, and get on with my own work?!
Time spent on reconnaissance is never wasted...

Don't worry, they're not tomatoes, they're the fruits of the plant and very poisonous!! DO NOT EAT THESE. There's another thread on here about potato seeds and a few people are going to give it a try next year.
My girls found their way into my heart and now they nest there

      I'll be SLACK!!!

I'm here for a good time, not a long time

        Unless they are tomtaters...

There have been a couple of threads on here about people grafting the top of a tomato plant onto the roots of a potato plant: two crops in one!

I think they are more likely to be potato fruit though, I've got three ripening on my windowsill ready to sow in spring
Warning: I have a dangerous tendency to act like I know what I'm talking about.

Is it OK to plant potato seeds? I know that most other veg is done that way.
Do potatoes breed fairly true to type in the first stage offspring (F1), or do you get some very weird (or even dangerous/toxic) crosses?

          Thanks

No spuds I know of are toxic (unless they're green of course), only the tattie apples!

I have a load of tattie apples off my Desiree maincrop that I am going to try for a bit of daftness!
Desiree is a cross between Urgenta X Depesche
Urgenta is a cross between Furore X Katahdin
Depesche is a cross between Duke of York X Imposant.

Its interesting to note that Desiree(maincrop) has my favourite early (Duke of York) in it's lineage!

I imagine the outcome will be a strange mix which may allow me to name my own potatoe and grow it on by tuber if I find a good one!

What will you name your potato variety?

Help can anybody out there please tell me what soil i need to put in my raised bed that my husband has made for me. The bed is 10ft long x 4foot wide and 1 foot deep. I have 18 broccolli plants to put in plus 18 savoy cabbages, onions, sprouts & asparagus. I know i will need a ton of soil and the garden centers will charge a fortune for john innes nos 3 which is what they tell me to grow my veg in. Can anybody tell me also a quick way to work this forum thing ive never done any of this before. Thanks everybody. cheers for the help in advance . judith.

Is the Tamina tomato not a "potato leaved" tomato?

Thanks, Snadger. We'll have a go with some potato seeds from this year's seed pods.
I tend to do the fruit ('cos she's too short to reach the apples ), and the Mrs does the veg and herbs (but I help out with the veg - but to her instructions). We don't interfere with each other's plants - not out of posesiveness, but because different people have different ideas.
I'm not sure what we'd call a new variety though. We'd probably eat them before realising that we should have saved one or two for replanting.

Yep, I'm growing some of these this year! They are grown as a cordon though similar to most tomato varieties, sideshoots removed! Not too impressed with the taste but reasonable sized toms and plenty of them!

                        Welcome to the vine!

You are best off starting a new thread if you want to ask a new question as you are more likely to get people's attention. (In the main page for the forum click on "New Thread" on the left just under the ads above the box that says "Threads in Forum")

I can't help much on your actual question but the two questions I would be asking are (1) can you get any farmyard manure and (2) have you got to fill the raised bed all at once or can you add more every season until you have built the level up - makes it easier to afford!

                        All the best

Now that sounds like a good thread title for next year when we've all had a chance to sample the results of our experiments

"Sophie's Choice" sounds like a good name for mine - not for literary reasons, just because that's my daughter and it's her that wears the trousers! (At least, she likes to think she does.)
