  • Things I've learned from this site

I joined this site in June of this year and I've got so much out of it - these are some of the things I've learned:

    1. You can ask questions and someone will try to help.
    2. I now know what kohlrabi looks like.
    3. A new word - bokashi - I don't know what it means but I've learned a new
    word.
    4. It's worth a try, growing brocolli in bins.
    5. Some good ideas of what to grow over the winter months.
    6. From the section on what people harvested each day:
I've decided to use something from the garden each day, even if it's
just a few leaves of basil or a sprig of rosemary. We've had rain each
day since mid-June so pickings haven't been great.
    7. How to make onion marmalade - this recipe proved very useful, as the
onions were tiny, wet and tasteless (see rain, above) but the marmalade
    is lovely.
    8. To be thankful for what we've got from the garden - a few courgettes
made it through, and the carrots (in a container to outwit the carrot
fly) are abundant and gorgeous. This ties in with 6. above - even if the
weather hasn't been the best, the garden has still given us some
produce we wouldn't otherwise have had.

I'm going to finish here as I feel I'm taking the positive approach way over the limit.

Seriously, thanks to everyone on these forums - I've got great tips and help.

I wouldn't even know where to start with what I've learned, so I'll just add my thanks to the more experienced grapes who have helped me. It's made my first year even more enjoyable and set me up for a better one next year.

I work on the premiss 'He who makes no mistakes makes nothing'

I use the knowledge gained from the vine plus experimentation to grow stuff.
An example is swedes. I have never been able to grow decent swedes even though I try every year. This year I sowed in pots indoors (on advice from the vine) and have reasonable swedes. Next year I will do the same but thin to ONE before planting out, and have excellent swedes, hopefully!

Advice and experimentation is the way to go!

Well! That's my lesson for the day - I have trouble with swedes, so next year, start them in pots. Excellent, thanks for that.
