  • At last... a decent crop of Garlic.

Well considering the terrible weather this year I'm amazed how well my garlic has done.

Planted it on March 28th and dug it up yesterday.

    Decent size too.

Best thing is that they were planted from some bulbs I had left over from last years crop so I must have inadvertantly developed a new strain which does well in a rubbish summer.

Well done vegmandan! I'm jealous, especially as this was the year I intended growing loads. I set aside two beds...........one for autumn sown and one for spring sown.
BOTH lots succumbed to onion white rot which I didn't know was in the soil!
Never mind, spurred on by my enthusiasm and your success I'll try again this year in a diffferent area!

I've just read that planting alliums where there has previously been brassicas can help growing them without the onion rot getting hold.

That's a top harvest though, by anyone's standard!!! Well done you.

        Vegmandan -

This year, my garlic didn't do well at all, just ended up small and wet.

Congragulations - the garlic look great. Enjoy.

I think enviromesh is the only solution but it's not cheap stuff.

Blimey! That is an amazing crop - well done! We had loads but they bulbs were tiny and to be honest too fiddly to peel. Yours are beauties, I bet they taste fantastic too.

I've only grown garlic twice, last year we had an amazing crop, they obviously like warm, dry springs followed by a summer standing neck deep in flood water, but this year, although I did manage a crop they were nowhere near as good, and certainly nothing like yours, well done. They do say that garlic very quickly adapts to the soil/conditions, so it is possible that you have produced a strain that could cope well with the conditions this year.

Oh my - very very impressive - haven't grown it this year but have ordered some to plant in the autumn. I would be over the moon to get a harvest like that!!

I've never had any success planting in Autumn as it just seems to sit in cold wet ground all winter and suffers as a result.

I would really recommend planting the appropriate variety in late March like me.

I know garlic needs a spell of cold weather to grow well but March is cold enough for it to get a cold snap.

I've had a great crop ever since giving up Autumn planting even including the last 2 years of rubbish Summer weather so If you've had a problem with Autumn planting and had a disappointing crop then I'd give Spring planting a go.

well, you've convinced me to give up on Autumn garlic.
And I'm not going to waste money on "proper" garlic seed again either. It's supermarket cloves for me next year.

Most of my garden and allotment has been taken over by environmesh. Good stuff, but looks ugly. Wish there was another way.

My autumn planted garlic was great this year. Will plant some again this year.

I plan to plant in autumn and spring, surely at least one of them has to give me a crop!
