  • I could cry!

Blight has hit my tomatoes Over the weekend 4 of my 9 tomato plants developed signs of blight - brown patches on stems and tomatoes turning brown/black.

I am completely devastated. I've nurtured those plants since April and have sat watching them grow heavy with fruit. Been waiting patiently for them to ripen and now this.

Had to strip the unaffected green tomatoes off the plants then remove the stems and roots. I am hoping some will ripen on my windowsill and will have to turn the rest into green chutney - anyone have any good recipes?!

I am now praying that the other plants have escaped but don't hold out much hope.

I lost most of mine last year; and so sprayed twice this year and no sign on spuds or toms so far.

I have given up on tomatoes this year, firstly they were hard to germinate and now blight, lost the lot as they were late to get going.

I'm sorry - it's hard to lose a crop, especially when you've grown from seed and you're so close to eating the fruits of your labour! We had loads of tomatoes just getting ready to ripen 3 weeks ago, went on hols and left garden in 'care' or non-gardening next door neighbours, and for some reason, all the fruit (which would still have been green) has vanished! Just 8 or 9 tomatoes left out of carefully nurtured plants!

You might be fine ripening them in a drawer though. Paper bag and a banana nearby should do the trick!

Heartfelt commiserations, this has happened to us. Picked all the tomatoes that looked unaffected - 3 carrier bags full from 6 plants. Carefully laid them out on the dining room table but gradually they are all developing brown patches on them. Thrown loads away this morning. Feel really down about it but will try again next year.

Sorry to read about your toms, Duggie. Better luck next year and hope it hasn't affected the other crops.

Sorry to hear about your tomatoes

I have 16 plants of plum tomatoes, and they seem to have blight too. I am going to make green tomato chutney next week. There are loads of recipes about just google green tomato chutney or look under the recipe section on this site. Any problems PM me.

Last year I also lost most of my tomatoes ( nearly two hundred plants ) but you never ever give up as hope is the last thing to die. This year at the beginning of july I sprayed my tomato plants with dithane, so far no blight and a very good crop.
                            My best regards to all

I have a feeling that this may have happened to me too on the plot. I managed to do ok with the spuds, but the toms are showing signs of brown patches.

I am just thankful that, so far, the couple of plants in the garden seem to have escaped (although I am not convinced totally yet as the hanging basket seems a bit poorly).
