  • Potatoes for Christmas

Can I presume, that you can grow potaotes in an unheated greenhouse at any time?

Also, I wish to grow some for Christmas. Can you recommend any types that will be suitable.

I'm a Maris Piper fan, but would like to try others.

Don't know about the greenhouse as I don't have one, but the variety that WERE to be sold by the local garden shop were Orla (cept none arrived) and instead we were given Charlotte's.

It would be remiss of me not to point out that plants respond to the length of the day and temperature. You can't just sow and plant anytime you like. Well, you can, but it's usually a big waste of time and effort.

Garden centres sell very expensive seed potatoes at this time because it's become rather fashionable to promote the idea of "fresh new potatoes for Christmas". Far be it from me to say they're cashing in on an outside chance.

Yes, you can be lucky and get a late crop of potatoes if you plant July/ August, but more often:
the tubers will not get going
blight will arrive (it can happen inside too)
      powdery mildew will set in
      other rots will join them
      the plants fail to thrive
      the stems get very spindly
you just about manage to protect them from frost, and
you turn out the pot to discover 3 very small potatoes.

Give it a go, but don't be too disappointed if it doesn't yield anything like you imagine.

The GC had a choice if i remember right of charlotte or maris peer.
Warning: I have a dangerous tendency to act like I know what I'm talking about.
