  • A double tomato......

Hmmm i've never seen a twinned tomato before has anyone else? See below. Essentially there's two fruits fused together growing from one stem attatchment.

    Nature is amazing.....

The variety is unknown i planted the seeds of some tesco finest mini-plum tomatoes and have had a real mix of fruit and tastes. (i suspect that the original's were f1 fruits)

Save seeds from your favourite - you can get your own personal variety of tomato! (And a double yolker, like Snadger's egg!)

We had one a bit like that - more of a boot shape though cos there was a little one growing at right angles from a bigger one, if you see what I mean.
Warning: I have a dangerous tendency to act like I know what I'm talking about.

Never seen that before! If the same rule applies to tomato babies as humans, you might find that an F2 generation from this seed will also twin!

Sorry to burst peoples bubble about re-emergence of the name love-apple for toms but...
It is usually caused by an abnormality in the flower as it is developing, by nutritional or environmental factors rather than anything genetic. When you grow a lot of them you see some wierd and wonderful shapes (and some very funny ones - think slightly rude), and it is more common than you would think, but they obviously never make it to the shop shelves. Watch out for similar odd bits growing alondside peppers and sometimes inside them too.

I have had double (or more) fruits from odd-looking spread-out flowers. I think it can be caused by physical damage at the flowering stage.

The series of events can be nutritional or environmental, or inherent, but they always act upon the regulation of gene transcription and expression and therefore I would argue that it IS genetic. That's my Biochemist head speakin! :P

                  Take it to the extreme

You reminded me of these on the real seeds site.
Vegetable Seeds : Vine Tomato Seed
This is a rather unusual tomato from central Europe that grows what can only be described as a cluster of cherry tomatoes all fused together.

They're on my list for next year

We could easily get into the old nature/nurture argument here if we are not careful but I don't think that is really for a gardening forum!

Me, too. And for the love of my life wouldn't understand how can that shape be reliably characteristic for a variety if not going down the gen line. Or is this shape the result of something else?

Anyhow, I find they taste nice, too, also called travelling tomato, for who knows what reason.

Why on earth is that not suited to a gardening forum? I'd have thought it was of great interest to many of us.
I was feeling part of the scenery
I walked right out of the machinery
My heart going boom boom boom
