    ah but don't you see richard at GS it's because of the way you were brought up............ ( i agree though that the subject is an endless topic. To make it worse theres rarely consistant evidence to verify any given theory and thus it spins round and round and round.....)

    in Physics the rules are rules.
    In biology the rules are normally rules and occasionally guidelines
    In psychology the rule is that there's normally more than one guidline to any given problem.

    In music there are no rules....the freedom is in expression and performance but not as some may try to convince you in the following of the 'classical' rules. In a similar way technique is there to forget and is a foil for greater expression. However technique by itself it will never create freedom as freedom is the combination of a performers musical imagination focused through expression with no regard for technique.

        I'm very worried as to what happens in Chemistry...

        ...however, in response to the whole nature/nurture thing, I'm not sure where that comes in. My point was that whether it's nature OR nurture (or both!), it's gene transcription and regulation that is affected, since these are controlled by feedback mechanisms and cell signalling. Nature/nurture surely relates to whether or not a trait is present at birth or is developed over time?

        Ooh it's a bit deep, so I'll go off and mash up some cells (yes, I am cloning and am preparing 'Maxipreps' of DNA. Gotta love that e.coli smell!).

        Bet you lot didn't realise I was only a part-time 'Sluglobber', eh??

            Which reminds me of what my physics teacher used to say (rather glumly)

            If biology goes wrong, the subject dies.
            If chemistry goes wrong, the subject explodes.
            If physics goes wrong - sigh - it just doesn't work.

            I think he might have stopped saying that after he taught me though. We did a transformer experiment, we were supposed to step the power down, send it safely across the classroom and then step it up the other end. We got the transformers the wrong way round - result - kazillions of volts zooming across a room full of obnoxious teenagers. Wheeee!

                I wasn't all that good in Chemistry, Physics or Biology, so I have no idea what to think with this one. It was made up of Six!

                  See, when I went to school it was just called "Science". No splits of any kind - atoms or otherwise.

                  I know how to work out how much energy is in a peanut though with nothing more than a pin, a bunsen burner and a cup of water.

                          I wonder if they have to do COSHH assessments, too? All I remember about the peanuts and energy is that a calorie = 4.1 joules. Random, eh?

                          On a side-note, there was a chap at Loxwood Vintage Rally last weekend with a whole collection of old Bunsen burners! Bizarre! Reminded me of school-dayze Chemistry though, and what one of the teachers wrote in my leaving book:

                          Old Chemists never die. They simply fail to react.

                          My other Chemistry teacher was Dr Watson - I kid ye not! We once had a lesson on balancing chemical equations and he caught me talking. He shouted out, 'Perhaps MISS LEE would like to come and show us how this one is done!', pointing to the one on the board. Being a cocky little beggar, I strolled up to the board, shouted back, 'It's ELEMENTARY, MY DEAR WATSON!' and balanced it. He couldn't actually hold back the laughter and we always did get on fabulously after that, tee hee!

                            Good Greif McSee that's a frankin-tomato. It's almost frightening!

                            I'm still getting fruit off my Feb plants, even the one that suffered a completely severed stem.
