    Hi Jameslovell
I am just down the A34 from you!
There was a 'when to plant' chart kicking around here a while back, I'll see if I can find it....

I wouldn't mind helping. I study web design and javascript (I just love the idea of a program compiling in a browser) in my spare time, and a significant part of my degree involved programming (C++ mostly). I'd love to start a project with a database as I am a newb with those. I think it would be a great idea for a website with lots of clickable text and different ways to view the info. I hate downloading anything.

Otherwise, I have lots of pics on my blog you can use.

        Hi James
I don't think you look like Sam but can understand how that can happen!
I think your idea is a fab one, yep it will take a bit of time but you will elarn so much from doing it! It will also help people like me!!! I'm a newbie planter and yep I keep the seed packets but hey some of my seeds don't look as glamourous as those on the packet when they start to arise from the gorund!!

Well done for the thought idea and keep me posted! will help you with pics next year then if you like?

          Hi,
I'm up for helping out too. Like everyone else, using a XLS to plan/track our first years progress on the plot. Let us know if/how you want help.
Mind you that Almanac thing looks pretty nifty.

          Cheers

I bought this too and my opinion is quite the opposite. I had problems installing it - a whole area of the program was corrupted and despite nemunrous attempts to resolve the situation vie E mail , phone etc, I got nowhere so gave up and deleted it, Very poor product support and back up.

              James,

I agree with other grapes here, in my seond year of growing I now recognise seedlings from weedlings but didn't at first. Helps if you sow in rows or stations.

The idea of recording what you did & when is good to learn from, I keep a table in XL I built from Carol Kleins 'grow your own veg' book and the data on back of seed packets.

I also did a little spud harvest calendar to know when to harvest spuds of different varieties planted at different times. I posted it on this site a while back but don't know how to link to a past post, so search 'Potato harvest calendar' and you'll find it, might be usefull to put into your program if you do it. As clever as I thought this calendar would be, the spuds were too small so I ending up leaving them longer anyhow. So the old method of digging a few up to check if they are ready is probably better than a calendar!!

              all the best,

              Chris.

Faced with a large empty allotment my mind went into overdrive and then panic as I realised I didn't know where to start. It was a bit bigger than the 2m x 6m tubs in the garden.

I found a website GrowVeg.com - The Smart Way To Plan Your Garden which lets you draw out the plot and plan it visually with images of the plants themselves (see attached). It also, and this was incredibly important for a first timer, told me how many plants I could fit into the area. So no wastage - in theory - I still went overboard with the seed purchasing!

I find it hard to keep a detailed visual image and this reminded me where I had planted everything and it keeps a record over the seasons to stop you repeat planting the same family in the same areas. It's easy to start a new design, using the same base plot layouts, just changing the plants. If I get bored at work at lunchtime I can escape online to the plot for half an hour and tweak...

With time I doubt I'll need it but I would have been stuck without it. Other lottie holders have been amazed at my ability to plan. If only they knew!!

I use a program called Plotcrop Plotcrop (Sorry can't get the link right).
It's basically a planning and record keeping tool for small scale fruit and veg growers. It took a while to set it up but I now find it very useful and update it every few days. I can print out plans of my plot for using outside and can easily refer back to what I had growing where from years ago. It works for me.

                        Hi Tracy
Yeah not long now, only a few weeks.
Whats the weather like out there at the moment? I have been looking at the BBC website and it says around 30c. But they can't even get it right for here in UK so I doubt they are getting it right for you.

Nice, whats the temp out of shade? Will spend most of my time in he pool anyway. I sunbathe for a bit, then cool in the pool, then dry in the sun and bathe agiain, then in the pool, and so on and so forth until lunch/dinner/etc.

Really can't wait to get away, work has been awful these last few weeks so need some space from it.

temp in the sun is about 44 thats roughly 106 so be warned and bring sun cream many people burn on the first few days as the breeze makes it very deceptive .where are you staying ? in caleta or corralejo
