  • Carrots and Spinach

    Hello,

It's September and I want to sow carrots and spinach For harvesting before Christmas. I have been told that this is possible but would like to know the best varieties. They will be in well fertilised containers and grow bags respectively. Under cloches. on a south facing roof gardem. Please let me know...

My research so far has dug out ...

    Carrots:

Thumbelina, Orbit, Parmex, Oxheart or Little Finger for the containers. But nothing as far as "ok to sow in Sept"

    Spinach:

Popeye Perpetual. For grow bags and Sept sow.

Could you help a newbie work some winter wonders or am I dreaming of a christmas dinner I aint gonna get?

    Thanks
    Ben

    Ok

    Where are you first?

If you are in the UK, then you are pushing it to get carrots by Christmas. If you want to try then buy the fast growing types, sometimes called earlies. If we have a warmish sept/oct you might just get some smaller ones.

Spinach, you can grow anytime of year, esp under cloches. You can also get winter lettuces in for the winter.

I'd throw a couple of spuds in the growbag myself, you might just get some for your christmas dinner. Grow the lettuces and spinach in smaller pots if you have any, along with trying the carrots.

Yes I'm afraid it's a bit late for carrots. Try it, but you probably won't get much of a crop. I sowed in August last year and they were very poor (Parmex).

The spinach is more likely to succeed but it's still not going to romp away.

I would go for some lettuce and some mixed oriental brassicas myself.

Too late for carrots: it's too dark, wet and cold now, and the days are only getting shorter.

          Zazzzen999 - about growing spinach in Winter - I didn't know that.

I've never grown spinach but I'd like to and I'm hoping to grow a few things over winter.

Is there anything special I need to know about spinach?

          Thanks
