Now my plot is ready, should i start growing some seeds, of garlic, onions and leeks???? If so what should i look out for over winter and if i plant now when should i look to harvest???? Early next year?

Seeds of the onion family are normally sown in spring (in modules indoors if you want to start them off early). Garlic is rarely grown from seed - planting cloves in autumn really depends on your ground, but do get them in as early in spring as possible (e.g. February), as they need at least a month of cold temperatures or they won't cleave (make proper cloves instead of a single small bulb).

It's a bit late now to be sowing anything outdoors apart from maybe some broad beans in late autumn (assuming you like them!). You can also plant onion sets (baby onions) of some varieties. Otherwise, if the ground is clear I would just mulch it with plenty of manure or compost and leave the worms to do their job

Oh, and if you plan to have any fruit bushes, they usually go into the ground over winter whilst they are dormant, so you can order them now and plant them out when they arrive.

the garden centres round here say it'll be another couple of weeks before they get onion sets in

You could try overwintering peas. Not guaranteed but worth a try I reckon
Choose a hardier, early type (e.g. Meteor)

The local Wyevale haven't got their garlic cloves or onion sets in yet, but will do (I quote) "soon". I imagine Wilkos will have then in due course as well. I ordered mine from Dobies.
