I also either put it in my composter, or else I put it on my beds or borders at the end of the season.

you can, grow bags are good too, once you've taken out whatever you were growing in them.

Hi, firstimer 1. Yes you can put it on the lottie. Spent compost will not have much of a nutrient value but it will still make a very good soil improver. A couple I know don't have a garden and use growbags on their balcony. I always scrounge them at the end of the season for adding to my compost heap.

                P. S. What will you call yourself in the future? You won't be a 'firstimer' for long.

Me too - Compost heap or as a soil improver.

Avoid using it where same-family crops will grow next year - so if its a growbag that had Toms in it don't put it where you will grow Spuds, Toms, etc. next year.

Also, as an addition to Kriten's comments, if miniature or patio roses have grown in that pot, then be a little careful since if it goes into the compost heap, particularly if the compost is not totally rotted down enough, some of the bacteria which decompose the roses won't do your next year's roses any good if you use it on other roses. Sometimes roses in particular have some trouble growing in a spot where roses have previously been because, I think, the bacteria which decomposed the previous roses are pretty hard on the new ones too.

This may well be true for all plants, but for roses in particular it has been a noticeable problem for mine at least. (Wish I'd found this site before I had to learn that one the hard way!)

Don't you believe it. I was having tea with an older friend, yesterday, who's in horticultural societies and all that. I was teaching her the difference between male and female cucumbr flowers, teaching her how to make a 'clamp', explaining the correct time to harvest onions...

Now, where do you think I learnt all that? Hmmm?
