    How interesting this is - I'll be taking all your advice for next year - I'll come back to this later, as although I actually have some ripe tommies this year, not all of the 6 varieties I have are ready.

      I've got piccolo growing from supermarket toms and I agree. It doesn't seem to be an F1 in any discernable sense. When I was looking into this, I discovered that American growers treat them as open pollinated but there's one site here selling the seeds at £4 for 5 seeds - on the strength of them being F1 presumably. Take it from me (and DavidJP!) that if you like piccolo, save seeds!

        I've grown Piccolo too for the first time because I was so impressed by the ones I bought.

        I'm not convinced that my home grown ones taste as good, interestingly, but I will try them again.

          So hard to tell, isn't it, being as growing conditions and the weather (ha ha!) can make a difference to flavour.
