onions - when??

Hi everyone

well today i have dug over my small patch and put some nutrients back into the soil, compost and fish, blood & bone.

I have my onion sets and would be really grateful if someone would let me know when to plant them out (i may do this tomorrow if thats good) and also can i plant them in the same spot as the ones i took out a few weeks back, i only have a little plot in my garden!

Toby Buckland on Gardeners World said on the programme this week that this weekend is a must-do for planting onion sets. I've just got back from the lottie after planting 50 Senshyu and 50 red ones.

Toby Doo dah on GW said he was putting them in this week, bought mine today, rough dug the bed on friday in the sunshine hoping it would dry out enough to put the mincer over it friday afternoon we had a thunderstorm and the ground was sodden again this morning, its been a dry day today so might give it a go tomorrow

i have 50 senshyu and 50 red ones as well to do tomorrow then, well it is all ready, better enjoy the weather while we can, as says its gonna be a nice day!!

I went to Wilkos to get some sets to plant out this weekend but the sales assistant said that they were having problems getting any in due to a shortage resulting from a general crop failure. Anyone else heard this?

No, not heard this at all. I phoned Dobbies on Friday to see if they'd got any in yet and they had loads of Senshyu and Red variety Electric. I was going to try the local Wyevale but couldn't find a phone number for them. Happy with Dobbies though. I paid £1.49 for 50, is that a good price or could I have got them loads cheaper elsewhere?

I bought all my onion sets from Wilko this year. I got White Rot. Never had it before.

Just picked up 100 Radar and 100 Electric just over 850 grams for £3.21 all loose pick your own from my local small GC, they also had huge Solent White garlic bulbs for £1.20 also loose.

I have Senshyu ( an old favourite) and Radar.

I also bought some white strong garlic who's name escapes me and some autumn planting shallots(which were very expensive)

Whole lot cost not a kick in the bot off eight squid!

I might try a few of my own garlic planted in the autumn as well, just as an experiment!

Been planting leeks today so I will be having an allium weekend!

My onion sets (ordered from Dobies) haven't arrived yet! Which is just as well because the ground isn't ready for them to be planted out anyway. Despite two completely dry days this week, including today, the torrential rain the rest of the week means that it's getting worse. Far too wet to dig, and there's plenty of digging to be done before I can do any planting. Sigh.

Any hints on when's the latest I can get them in? I thought I was safe even if it takes until, say, the end of October?

I'm *so* fed up with the rain!!

PS how exciting!! I decided to check the forecast - usually don't bother these days as it's just depressing lol - and the next 10 days look really nice, only one day with light rain and the rest all dry! I might get out to do some digging in the week then and get everything ready for when the onion sets finally turn up

Can you move the 'onion space' at all? It's best not to plant the same things in the same places as disease can build up in the soil - if it's impossible mental note you must move them next year!

Hubby foolishly asked me to go to the garden centre to get a pressie for his Nan, managed to come out with lots more too! 50 red onions, 50 Radar, 50 Senshyu and 20 Shallots. I was going to plant them this weekend but there's no room yet so they will have to wait a while. Dementer, it says plant in autumn so I think you have time on your side still.

Honestly, it was rotten today, a lovely September day, all dry and sunny but I couldn't get and do anything cos the ground is still like soup! Had to resort to taking my little one to the library which was a bit embarassing because I've had 2 books since April and I've been too busy in the garden to take them back! Ho hum.

thanks vicky, i may just plant them the other side of the cabbages then, i only have a few left and am planting more tomorrow, but i think i am gonna put my nets over the top extremely tightly so the god damn butterflies cant get in ha ha !!

I plant my sets and garlic in October, read about this being the time somewhere and it seems to be OK for this area, of course I suppose the further you go north, then the earlier this would be.

Don't know terribly much about the norf, do they have perma frost from Brum upwards?
