I am eating lots of humble pie

I have read here often of the difference in taste between sweetcorn you grow and sweetcorn you buy. I did not believe - (I am so sorry) - you see in my niavety because I get my veggies from a veg box - I thought that I was immune from the "overtravelled, overpackaged supermarket taste".

Oh my G*d was I wrong. I have just harvested and tasted my first minicorn and I will never go back !

So at least thats one thing for definite I will be growing next year, oh and as I said I will be having my cup of tea this evening with a big slice of humble pie .......... and in future I will listen to those who are more experienced in such things than I.

So many more things are better home grown too. I've never had spuds like the earlies I harvest and I've never had beans like the ones I grow, And peas! Don't get me started on peas! In spite of the hard work and the disappointments when the weather beats us, you can soon see why people continue to grow their own produce. There's nothing like it - and the little dash of smug pride for seasoning too!

Just harvested a couple of my sweetcorn today at the allotment with a view to giving my chooks a treat!
Peeled back the leaves and had a nibble.........looked at the chooks..........had another nibble...........chooks looked at me. I told them "this corn was too good for chooks" but somehow they still seemed excited so I had to give them half!

I've said it before and I'll say it again, when you GYO you can taste the satisfaction!! Absolutely everything tastes better than you've ever had before!

I think everything you grow yourself tastes better than shop bought. Sweetcorn eaten within seconds of picking though? Food of the Gods

Asparagus, courgettes, purple sprouting brocolli - one could go on and on, but when you can go and harvest vegetables and get them into the pot as quickly as possible, the flavour is incomparible to anything bought. The same increase in taste is true of top fruit or soft fruit that is homegrown, as it is, hopefully, not overwatered and pumped full of nitrates and is picked when it is ripe.

Peas; sweetcorn, french beans, strawbs, courgettes, tomatoes - these make the most impact on me eaten straight from harvest.

Mmmmmmmmmmmmm home grown asparagus. Makes my mouth water now thinking about it. Never makes it to the table, I put the pan on, go and cut the spears, straight in the pan and we eat it minutes later standing in the kitchen. Stunning.

There are some things that maybe aren't much different home grown (I'm still not sure I can tell the difference with carrots, swedes, courgettes or spuds, but then I've only grown one or two types, one year so I'm withholding judgement! But sweetcorn and tomatoes - have to be the top two for me - so far anyway - but then it'll be 2010 before I get any home grown asparagus! Oh, and raspberries. And next year we're doing strawberries too

Freshly pulled homegrown carrots are streets ahead of shop bought tasteless stuff in my view! One of my favourites!

I think the problem may be that I've not been doing any taste tests.

With the last of the sweetcorn we only had one cob between us so we had half each and I added a bit of frozen stuff to make up the difference - it was like eating a completely different vegetable!

Maybe next year I should set up some blind tastings lol

There really is no comparison Demeter..........we're not talking a little bit of difference in taste, were talking a strikingly BIG difference in taste! For me anyway!

Shop bought carrots always taste either of water or perfume to me!!After nearly 4 years of trying this has been the 1st year we've had total success with our carrots & not needed to get from a shop~if anymore proof re the taste test is needed our little girl didn't like them to start with as they were "too carroty"!!I'm pleased to say she is now converted & hopefully we'll have enough to see us through the winter months!!(still picking everyones brains re the best way to store?Leave them in the ground?store in sand?Any tips??)

Carrots don't even take as long to boil either. I've never been much of a carrot lover me self, that is, until i grew my own. What a blimmin difference. And sweetcorn, don't start me on sweetcorn, 18 plants and still not enough. Ggettingg witthdrawll ssyyymptoms.
