  • purple haze, healthmaster and yellowstone...

anyone heard of or grow any of these carrots? what are they like? i've just seen pictures, purple haze in particular looks really fake! i'm really interested in trying to grow these varieties, but i just wanted to know if anyone has, and what do they taste like? xxxx

They definately aren't fake Purple Haze are fairly purple, Healthmaster is a fairly red/dark orange colour, and Yellowstone is yellow. The first 2 have a very carrotty flavour, the yellow is a little milder.

I don't have experience of the 2nd one but would agree with Sarzwix that the purple haze is good~although still to grow very big we've had a few baby ones whole & they were very carroty~The purple is just on the outside & orange middled.( presume this is the way they'll stay even when bigger?)We also have grown Yellowstone. The 1st harvest were VERY mild~almost bland, but the flavour seems to have improved now they're a bit bigger~Also we did 2 sowings & not sure if it's my imagination or if the 2nd sowing has a stronger flavour? They look like little sunshines on the plate!!
I'm sure that "orange" carrots are actually a far newer concept than purple/red/yellow & even black?Think it's just what we've grown to expect/accept as the norm!

If your not sure about a coloured carrot get yourself a packet of rainbow mixed, they have a good mix of colours and the purple in the looks like purple haze. Try a packet next time alongside your others which also taste more carroty than your supermarket mass produced carrots.

Our faves are chantennay red cored and the rainbow mixed

it's the discovering thats fun to find your favourite's ask any grape they all have trials of something or other.

I've got purple haze, yellowstone, samurai and another funny-colour variety to try next year, as well as some parmex and normal orange ones too.

Carrots always used to be purple until William of Orange turned up and became the King. Then everyone thought it would be dead patriotic to grow orange carrots, and the idea stuck. There was a thread about it earlier this year, but I can't find it right now...

We grow all sorts of colours of carrots, and we find that the non-orange ones suffer from carrot fly alot less than the orange ones.

The purple does tend to disappear when they are cooked though.

The darker the carrot the more beta carotene it's supposed to have innit?
