I agree, that's a great way to grow any onions, spring especially.

Perhaps we should have a 'growing onions workshop' - starting on Boxing day - which is often the day that people sow onions for next year. Different ways of growing, with everyone posting photos of the onions as they grow?

I have tried all ways guttering, pots ,allotment nice talking shouting shaking sticks but all i ever get is a few wispy blades of grass and then one day you look and presto ! they are dead.
Same with carrots as well, only i get an even worse result eg sweet nothing.
a good put down line to use !

If having brains was a fatal disease, you would be the only survivor.

          Just as I'm game.

I will need to learn how to post a photo though.

          Any pointers, please?

save the photo to your desktop, make sure you have resized it using paint or whatever so its not massive ( they usually are quite big from a camera or phone) then when you make a post ,( or quick reply using advanced) on the top row on the right of the smiley face there is a paper clip symbol called 'attatchments', click on that and a pop up will come up.

choose 'upload from computer', and hit 'browse', then browse to your desktop, find your photo and click on it, it will fill in the details for you, click 'upload' wait till it is finished then close the pop up window, then finish your post and 'submit reply'.

bingo, one post with photo attatchment.

Ok, around Boxing Day I'll start an onion thread - must pop it in the diary.

I'll no doubt be down the shops the day after, standing alone in an aisle of the co-op wondering what the heck Onion Thread is and where to buy it from, and why I needed it in the first place...

Edited to add: it will be the 29th December, may as well make it the right day on the moon calendar.

well i have sets left over, red and white, but I am not sure how long they last?

I have spring onion seeds so thats easy, and I have some red italian patio onions to try for next spring, so I can spare a few of those for an early planting experiment.

Sets should really go in now if you have any space. If you have a pot or two, you can put them in there, and replant in the spring when you have space. Or modules, it lets them grow the roots over the winter and get established.

Its definitely seeds on the 29th!

I have been giving the sets away left and right cos I had so many, as I only have a little garden i dont need the amount they sell, and i couldn't get them loose.
the last shall go in on halloween, just to see, but the ones I planted 2 weeks ago are not showing much activity, not sure if they are supposed to show anything yet?

so seeds on 29th dec sound good to me.

What are the best sets to put in now? Was thinking as mentioned to put into modules in greenhouse at home (unheated) and then plant on lottie Spring (once it is cleared)

no idea what mine even where, my mum got them and there was no label for type, however, after this thread i did bomb out into the greenhouse and lay up two trays just in case.
have saved the last few to do the halloween exp.
