  • things i found today.

i planted a whole packet of leeks, and out of all of them i have a grand total of 4 leeks ........ i found them under the parsnips today, i'm going to plant them in the front garden with the others i got off another kind grape

I also found 2 pepper plants as well, i thought they died off months ago, they are still tiny, but i'm going to bring them indoors, and try overwintering them.

i think i've got blight on my tomato plants, all the stems had brown patches on them and the leaves had brown blotches and they all went from looking dead healthy a couple of days ago, to dead dead today, anyway i pulled them up, just in case think its too late to get any now anyway.

i also found a inch long green spikey thing on my cucumber plant, got mildly hysterical till i realised it was the smallest cucumber in the world, that has spikes all over it ..... very weird.

i also had a carrot in the middle of my bird patio, it was bigger and straighter than any in the carrot patch lol.

my broccoli and caulis are just starting to get some heads.

and i saw my second ladybird of the year

Yes, baby cucumbers do look weird don't they?! The spikes will mysteriously disappear once the plant is ready for you to pick and eat it.

As for the toms, I don't think that's blight, at least I hope not cos exactly the same happened to my toms and I composted them (after harvesting the green ones). I think it's just the plant reaching the end of its natural life. I thought blight is more sort of rotten and infected-looking, not just dead-looking. Hope I'm not being too optimistic or I've just contaminated the compost bin

the ones in the front garden were a few days further on, and the stems were black, the lower leaves yellow, and the green leaves curling up,

they shouldn't be coming to the end of life, as they were still growing like mad, and had just come into flower, it's not been cold, just a lack of sunshine, then suddenly in less than a week, the front ones were completely dead.

Keep the baby cucumber WELL watered. They can drink a huge amount. We get better carrots from the birdseed than in the beds too. Annoying, innit?

ahhhh i never thought of them coming from the bird seed, there was red clover, barley sunflowers, and loads of other plants from the seeds, but i assumed i'd dropped a carrot seed ..... anyway, i've put some weed fabric down under it now, as it was looking messy, think i might grow some bird seed in the wild flower bed next year, for a different dimension

Are you sure the cucumber aren't burpless ones? They remain spikey until picking. That or I picked mine too early (well, the last one had run out, what else was I supposed to do?!?). My toms are all browning off, now, too. Poxy weather wasn't quick enough with the sunshine. I was also worried about it being blight, but yes, it's more 'dead' than 'rash' looking!

My marketmores are always prickly - but the prickles rub off easily.
