Lettuce fail to germinate

I have quite a few packets of lettuce seed which I have used over the year. About two/three weeks ago I sowed 4 rows direct into the ground, all different varieties and suppliers and they had all worked previously.
Not one has appeared.
I know they don't like heat but could the wet weather have affected them.
Also they have a wire grill over them so no birds/cats could get to them.
Any ideas where they went, Spain perhaps ?

Could be as we have some monster slugs around here.
But you normally see some remains stalks or what ever.
Absolutly nothing.

Not lettuces, they are so delicate that if they get them, you won't see any stalks - try sowing into modules and transplanting once they are a few inches high.

You'll have to use slug protection even then - you'd be surprised how excited they get at soft food this time of year.
