celeriac problems

My 'foodie' daughter gave me some celeriac seeds in March, which I planted for curiosity, never having eaten it before. We have waited patiently and decided today to pull some up. They each had a little slimy hole in them - didn't look like slugs, the holes were quite precise and only in one place. One bulb was completely hollow and slimy inside. The other 2 were salvagable and what we roasted off were delicious. I want to grow them again next year, but need to know what pest I'm fighting here! How do I ensure big bulbs without slimy holes?!

I would still guess that it was slugs that attacked your crop, they can do it to a potato so why not celeriac?

Yep, slugs. Definitely.

While it may have been slugs in your case, in the past mine have been attacked by white grubs about an inch long. I know because they were still in the root when I harvested it.

if that was earlier in the year it might have been carrot fly grubs...they also like celeriac.
