Banana Shallot seeds.

What is the best way to dry, collect and store shallot seed?

I have cut the seedheads from my Pigletwillie Banana Shallots and they are stinking me out right now from the wideopen carrier bag (no holes in the bottom) next to me. Some had ripened and started to spill seed on the ground.

Current plan is to use a seed tray without drainage holes on the bench in the greenhouse.


But would the airing cupboard be better, or, would it be too hot?

Also what should I do with the bulbs, are they spent, or are they worth keeping & re-planting?

Most advice for storing seed seems to say paper bags kept cool, dry and I think dark.

Well done you for getting the shallots to grow - mine were a total failure.

Definitely agree with Shirl(ey)..... Cool and dark, paper bag, not carrier bag, or seeds'll get sweaty and not dry out proper. Suggest not even 'threaten' the seeds with the airing cupboard, or they may walk out of their own accord Bunny.

I'd confine the bulbs that produced the gorgeous seed for you either to your tummy, beautifully roasted and caramelised, or to your tummy, beautifully roasted and caramelised. The choice is yours'.....
