What sand to use?

Hi all,


I want to store my carrots and know i need to layer using sand but ive been the garden centres and theres about 6 different types of sand, ranging from play sand to silver sand, what type should i be using??

well not builders sand thats for sure.

Silver sand is clean and fine, and play sand likewise cos its for children, more expensive I would think though.
be sure to wash them first, and the sand should be damp ( this from my mum), i have never done it, but apparently my dad used to.sadly she couldn't remember what sand he used.

I used builders sand and kept it damp to try and stop them drying out. Wasn't too successful for me as some did dry out and others became hairy with new root growth.
Peat or coir could be another alternative.
The last two years my carrots have stayed in the ground and been pulled as required..........much better I feel, and you still get that freshly pulled carrot taste!

I agree with Snager, I suspect that straw or fleece etc will help the carrots in the ground in cold weather.

Okay, straw it is, ive already got a load of that left from my strawberries! Thanks guys
