hi all,

i planted my winter onion sets 3 weeks ago,in my veggie patch i have put stakes either side and placed a cover of polythene over the top,and sides because i was told to protect them from the high winds with have over the autum and winter,am i right in doing so,as with the dry weather weve had for the past week they are about 2inches tall,am i forcing them through,

Hi finney. Yes you are forcing them. I would remove the polythene before it's to late in the year. If you want to cover them, try some netting, which would slow down the wind as it passes through. I personally don't put anything over mine and they are "most of the time" fine. The polythene would help to rot them and cause some unsavory conditions for fungito attack your crops. They are meant to be uncovered, try not to mollycoddle them to much.

I don't bother to protect them. They should be able resist the winter weather. However, I think giving them some protection won't hurt them either.

I intend covering mine with somefleece for the coldest part of the winter. Here in darkest East Yorks it gets rather cold at times.
